Text Notes
Introduction
-
We have already witnessed the marriage of Alex and Daniela
-
We are going to look together at a passage from the Bible that teaches us about marriage
The Context (v 21)
-
The first half of Ephesians describes our position in Christ
-
The second half tells us how we should live in the light of what God has done for us
Wives Submit (v 22—24)
-
NOT anti-women
-
Jesus’ whole life was lived in submission to His Heavenly Father
-
Male and female are EQUAL before God but not IDENTICAL
-
God has given the husband a headship role …
Wives Submit (v 22—24)
-
… a headship of care rather than control
-
“Whenever the husband’s headship mirrors the headship of Christ, then the wife’s submission to the protection and provision of His love far from detracting from her womanhood will actively enrich it” (John Stott)
Husbands Love (v 25—33)
-
The love that husbands are to demonstrate to their wives is sacrificial, a laying down of themselves
-
It is love with a purpose to help their wives achieve their full God-given potential
Application
-
Christian marriage is about each partner giving themselves up for the other …
-
What have we learnt this morning?
