Introduction

The book of Exodus, and the events narrated in it, is probably the most significant part of the Old Testiment

Some parts of the story are well known but many Christians do not understand the significance of the events for themselves today
Murder (v 13)
-
Does not prohibit all killing
-
All human life belongs to God
-
What is prohibited here is any taking of human life that has not been authorised by God
Adultery (v 14)

Adultery violates a part of God-s intention for creation
Stealing (v 15)
-
Fretheim: "Theft is an attack on the dignity of human beings and their work"

False Testimony (v 16)
-
Telling lies or misleading truths about other people is very destructive
-
Coveting (v 17)
-
This is about a person's dissatisfaction with their own possessions and a desire to try and obtain what belongs to someone else
Fear of God (v 18-26)

The fear of God can keep people from sinning
Application
-
What have we learnt this morning?

The only place for sexual intercourse is within marriage
-
We need to be very sure about our motives before we say anything negative about anybody else
-
Remember that these "words" are because God wants the best for us
