Text Notes
Introduction
- The book of Exodus, and the events narrated in it, is probably the most significant part of the Old Testament
- Currently we are working through a section that deals with various laws, at first sight many of them seem irrelevant to us but we have been discovering that the principles behind them are very relevant
Justice (v 1-9)
- Fair and impartial, no special treatment for the rich nor for the poor
- Whether or not someone is our enemy should have no effect on us doing the right thing
- Sabbath (v 10-13)
- The main reason the Sabbath year was instituted was to care for the poor
- The weekly Sabbath rest was especially to refresh the poorest
Festivals (v 14-19)
- The festivals gave an opportunity for everyone to be reminded about the fact that ultimately everything came from God
God’s Promise (v 20-33)
- God’s blessings were conditional on the people keeping His laws
- Sin takes us outside of God’s will
Application
What have we learnt this morning?- Justice should be fair and impartial
- The Sabbath is about care for the poor
- Ultimately everything comes from God
- God ensures that we will enter our inheritance
